At Broughton Primary School, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Our enrichment programme is designed to provide all children with a wide range of experiences that broaden horizons, develop talents and build confidence. Through educational visits, visitors, sporting opportunities, creative arts, leadership roles and community projects, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive in modern Britain. These experiences support the principles of the new Department for Education Enrichment framework by promoting personal development, inclusion, achievement and preparation for future success. We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to high-quality opportunities that inspire curiosity, foster ambition and create lasting memories throughout their primary school journey.

Each section of the DfE's Enrichment Framework has been broken down with Broughton's commitment to each, outlined in detail:

- Outdoor Learning & Forest School:

Forest School:

Forest School forms a significant part of our enrichment provision, enabling children to learn through exploration, challenge and discovery within a natural environment. Through regular visits to our newly-developed Forest School site within our school grounds, pupils develop confidence, resilience, independence, teamwork and problem-solving skills while fostering a deep appreciation of the natural world. Outdoor learning is embedded across the curriculum and supports learning in Geography, History, Science, wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

End-of-year Wainwright Fell Walk:

Every year, all pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 take part in a fell-walk. We take full advantage of the beautiful Lake District scenery that is on our door-step and each year, enjoy 'ticking-off' another Wainwright, which have included: Latrigg, Dodd Fell, Binsey, Lord's Seat & Sale Fell.

Walking a Wainwright fell offers children far more than just a day outdoors. It provides valuable opportunities for personal growth, wellbeing and learning that support their development both in and beyond the classroom.

Promotes physical health and fitness through exercise in a fun and engaging environment.

At Broughton Primary School, we see walking a Wainwright as more than a physical challenge. It is an opportunity for children to develop character, confidence and a sense of achievement while experiencing the unique beauty of the Lake District. These experiences help nurture resilient, curious and adventurous learners who are ready to embrace future challenges both in school and beyond.

Field work:

Fieldwork is a key part of our Geography curriculum and provides valuable opportunities for children to develop their geographical knowledge and skills in real-world contexts. As part of our enrichment programme, pupils take part in a range of practical fieldwork experiences, including river studies, where they investigate features, processes and the impact of water on the landscape through first-hand observations and data collection.

Children also develop essential map-reading skills, learning how to use four and six-figure grid references, interpret maps and navigate using a range of geographical tools. These skills are further enhanced through orienteering activities in PE, where pupils apply their geographical understanding in practical and engaging outdoor challenges.

By combining geography, outdoor learning and physical activity, these enriching experiences help children develop confidence, problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them, while making the most of our outstanding local environment and the opportunities it provides.

- Educational Visits & Residential Experiences:

Historical Themed Visits:

At Broughton, we believe that history is best brought to life through real experiences. Throughout their time at school, pupils can participate in a wide range of historical visits linked directly to their learning. These include visits to Muncaster Castle; Wordsworth House, Moorforge Viking Camp; Tullie House Museum, Vindolanda Roman Fort, The Tower of London, Eden Camp, Beamish and more.

Other Trips:

Our coastal visits to the beach offer exciting opportunities for both geographical and scientific enquiry. Pupils investigate pollution carry out beach litter-picks, and take time to simply build sandcastles and enjoy the coastal environment. We also make use of local nature reserves, where children can study wildlife, habitats, ecosystems and conservation firsthand.

As part of our Religious Education curriculum, pupils regularly visit local places of worship to develop a deeper understanding of faith, belief and the role religion plays within communities. Our close links with our local church provide valuable opportunities for children to explore Christian beliefs and traditions in an authentic setting, while learning about the significance of worship, prayer, celebration and community. Our R.E units where we offer our pupils the experience in taking part in a mock wedding & baptism are very enjoyable and insightful for our children.

The Theatre:

Children also benefit from visits to the theatre, providing opportunities to experience the excitement and inspiration of live performance. These visits include productions of popular West End shows, including Matilda, and The Lion King- exposing pupils to high-quality acting, music, storytelling and stagecraft, while helping to develop their cultural awareness and appreciation of the performing arts. Experiencing professional theatre allows children to engage with literature, music and the arts in a memorable way, inspiring creativity, imagination and confidence.

In addition, pupils enjoy attending local theatre productions at The Theatre by the Lake (Keswick), The Carnegie (Workington), The Sands Centre (Carlisle) and our local theatre in Cockermouth, The Kirkgate Centre.

Making the Most of Our Local Community:

At Broughton Primary School, we are incredibly fortunate to be located in the heart of the beautiful village of Great Broughton. Throughout their time at Broughton, pupils regularly explore the village and the surrounding area through a wide range of enrichment activities. Geography learning is enhanced through local walks and river fieldwork opportunities, allowing children to investigate human and physical features, develop map-reading skills and understand how communities and landscapes have changed over time. Our pupils benefit from visits to the local nature reserve 'Soddy Gap' & regularly visit Christ Church & the local park.

We also work closely with our local secondary school, Cockermouth School, providing opportunities for pupils to attend themed curriculum days, sporting events, transition activities and specialist workshops. These experiences help broaden aspirations, develop confidence and support a smooth transition to the next stage of education.

Residentials:

At Broughton Primary School, we are committed to providing our students with a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom. We believe that learning should be enriched with meaningful experiences, ensuring that every child leaves our school with a diverse range of opportunities that help shape their understanding of the world. Our residential package plays a vital role in this mission, offering children the chance to explore life in modern Britain through visits to some of the country’s most significant cities, including London. These experiences immerse students in the rich history, culture, and heritage of the UK, fostering a deeper appreciation for the society in which they live.

Alongside city visits, our residential trips offer children the chance to take part in outward-bound adventures, engaging in exciting activities in a natural environment. Whether conquering a climbing wall, navigating a canoe trip, or working together in team challenges, these experiences build confidence, resilience, and teamwork while encouraging a love for the outdoors. Many aspects of our residentials are designed to complement our bespoke curriculum, ensuring students can make meaningful connections between their classroom learning and real-world experiences. These trips also reinforce fundamental British Values, helping children develop an understanding of democracy, mutual respect, and individual liberty in an engaging and practical way.

- Arts, Culture & Creativity:

Creativity is celebrated throughout Broughton. Pupils access a rich programme of artistic and cultural experiences through Art, Music, Dance, Drama and performance opportunities.

Performances and Productions:

At Broughton Primary School, performance is a cherished part of school life and an important element of our enrichment offer. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience, develop confidence, express themselves creatively and experience the excitement of working together towards a shared goal.

Our youngest children begin their performing journey with an Early Years and Key-Stage 1 Christmas productions, delighting audiences with festive songs, Nativity storytelling and memorable performances.

During the Spring term, Year 3 and Year 4 take part in U-Dance, a fantastic festival and celebration of dance in our local area.

As pupils reach the end of each key stage, our Year 5&6 pupils celebrate with a major Summer production, creating a fitting finale to their primary school years.

Art & Culture:

Art is highly valued and celebrated at Broughton Primary School, and we are committed to providing children with a wide range of enriching experiences that inspire creativity and broaden their artistic horizons. Pupils study the work of both famous and local artists, exploring a variety of artistic styles, techniques and cultural influences. Through educational visits, visiting artists, practical workshops and opportunities for experimentation and discovery, children are encouraged to develop their creativity while gaining a deeper understanding of the role art plays in shaping our history, culture and communities.

Every year, our pupils take part in an 'All Around the World' topic, with every year group studying a specific country from around the world in-depth over the course of one week. These studies incorporate subjects such as: geography, history, R.E, food technology, music & art. At the end of the topic, the children's work is displayed in our school hall, and all parents/carers are welcomed into school to enjoy the children's work, providing a wonderful opportunity for children to share their learning with their family members.

- Leadership & Pupil Voice:

School Council:

Our School Council provides pupils with a genuine voice in school improvement. Democratically elected Key-Stage 2 representatives gather the views of their class members, discuss issues that matter to pupils and work alongside staff to help shape decision-making across the school. Through this role, children gain first-hand experience of democracy, leadership and representation while developing the confidence to advocate for themselves and others.

Head Pupils:

Two Year 6 Head Pupils are elected every year to support SLT in Celebration Assemblies, and to assist during parent/carer tours of the school. The Head Pupils are voted in through an anonymous poll, with all staff in school having an opportunity to vote. Head Pupils feel that is an honour to take on this role, and rightly feel proud the fact that they have been acknowledged for being such amazing role models within our school community.

Eco-leaders:

The BPS Eco-leaders are committed to helping Broughton become an environmentally responsible school. Members lead projects linked to sustainability, recycling, energy conservation and environmental awareness, encouraging pupils to think about their impact on the world around them. Through practical action and campaigning, children learn how they can contribute to creating a more sustainable future. Annual litter-picks in our local community are led by our Eco-leaders.

Sports-leaders:

The BPS Sports-leaders support our P.E leader in co-ordinating inter and intra school sports events. They are used as positive role models during P.E lessons, ensuring that our pupils understand that to achieve in P.E, it is not simply down to physical ability but more so about a positive mindset and good team work, of which our leaders are shining examples.

Year 6 Buddy System:

We encourage the children to be caring and nurturing towards each other in our school and the ‘Buddy Scheme’ pairs Reception and Year 6 children together. The children meet up on a weekly basis to share some ‘Buddy Time’ and we enjoy a range of activities: paired reading, art activities, nature trails and games. Our Reception children form very positive bonds with their buddies and they often spend time outside during breaks together!

Fundraising and Community Events:

Children actively support a variety of fundraising projects, charity events and community initiatives throughout the year. Whether raising money for local causes, supporting national charities or participating in community celebrations, pupils learn the importance of compassion, service and social responsibility while developing a strong sense of belonging within the wider community.

Each year, our children have the opportunity to take part in the village carnival with the school. This is a village tradition which has taken place for more than 100 years. Our children thoroughly enjoy this event, and members of our local community love to re-connect with the school that they once attended.

Through these varied leadership opportunities, Broughton pupils learn that they can make a meaningful contribution to their school, their community and the wider world. These experiences help to develop confident, responsible and caring young people who are prepared to become the leaders and citizens of the future.

Competitive Sporting Events:

Throughout the year, pupils represent the school in a wide range of sporting events, competing against other schools and striving to achieve their personal best. Inter-School Competitions:

Our pupils regularly take part in inter-school competitions across a variety of sports and physical activities. Children regularly participate in local sports festivals and tournaments that celebrate participation, teamwork and achievement. These events provide opportunities for pupils to compete alongside and against children from other schools, while experiencing the excitement and enjoyment of organised sport. Well-being Initiatives:

Throughout the year, pupils participate in a range of wellbeing initiatives designed to support emotional health, self-esteem and positive relationships. These activities help children develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, resilience and coping strategies while fostering a supportive culture where every child feels valued and able to thrive.

Outdoor Adventurous Activities:

Our unique location provides exceptional opportunities for outdoor adventure. Pupils regularly engage in activities that challenge them physically and mentally, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones and develop resilience, independence and problem-solving skills. Experiences such as walking in the Lake District, walking a Wainwright Fell and residential visits at Bassenfell & Derwent Hill Outdoor Activity Centres help children build confidence, work collaboratively and develop a lifelong appreciation of the outdoors.

- Community & Citizenship:

Annual Remembrance Day Commemorations:

Remembrance Day is an important event within the Broughton calendar and provides pupils with a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by previous generations. Through assemblies, classroom activities, poetry, artwork and acts of remembrance, children learn about the significance of remembrance, service and peace. These experiences help pupils develop a deeper understanding of historical events while promoting respect, gratitude and reflection. Links to our History curriculum ensure that children understand the lasting impact of conflict and the importance of remembrance in contemporary society. The children's artwork is displayed in our local church during the Remembrance Service.

Charity Fundraising Events:

Supporting others is an important part of life at Broughton. Pupils regularly participate in fundraising activities for local, national and international charities, developing compassion, generosity, empathy and social responsibility. Whether raising money through sponsored events, community projects, enterprise activities or themed fundraising days, children learn that even small actions can have a positive impact on the lives of others. These opportunities also strengthen connections between the school and the wider community.

Community Performances and Local Events:

As a school at the heart of its community, Broughton actively participates in a range of local events, performances and celebrations throughout the year. Children perform at community venues, participate in local commemorations and work alongside community groups and organisations. Our choir regularly sings within the local community, while pupils contribute to a variety of events that strengthen relationships between the school and local residents. Our Artwork is often displayed in the local church! These experiences foster a strong sense of belonging, civic pride and community spirit while helping children develop confidence and communication skills.

Church Services:

Our pupils lead services in Christ Church during Harvest, Easter & Christmas. Each class performs a themed poem, song or performance in front of parents, carers, family members and village residents, which are always very well-received.

Safeguarding Assemblies:

Each half-term, our local PCSO visits our school to deliver an assembly to support our children in keeping themselves safe. Themes for the assemblies include: Halloween & Guy Fawkes night safety, water safety, anti-social behaviour, stranger danger, online safety & more.

- Careers and Aspirations:

STEM Projects:

Throughout the year, pupils participate in a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects that encourage creativity, innovation and problem-solving. These projects challenge children to think critically, work collaboratively and apply their learning to real-life situations. Whether designing structures, solving engineering challenges or exploring scientific investigations, pupils develop resilience, teamwork and a deeper understanding of how STEM subjects influence the world around them. Children enjoy their annual STEM week, which takes place in the Autumn term, where children are visited by a wide-range of local businesses and visitors who have had successful careers in STEM.

Visits from Professionals:

Children regularly benefit from visits from professionals who share their expertise, experiences and career journeys. These encounters help pupils understand how the knowledge and skills they develop in school can lead to a wide variety of future opportunities. Visitors help to raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and inspire children to think ambitiously about their future education and career choices.

Encounters with Employers:

Broughton is committed to providing meaningful encounters with employers and members of the wider community. Through workshops, presentations, themed days and collaborative projects, pupils gain an understanding of the world of work and the contribution different industries make to society. These experiences help children appreciate the importance of communication, teamwork, perseverance and adaptability, while highlighting the relevance of their learning beyond the classroom.

Enterprise Opportunities:

Enterprise education plays an important role in developing pupils' confidence, creativity and leadership skills. Through initiatives such as the Bright Stars Enterprise Programme, children have the opportunity to establish and run their own businesses, developing products, managing budgets, marketing their ideas and selling goods to customers. These experiences provide valuable insight into entrepreneurship, teamwork and financial awareness while encouraging pupils to think creatively and solve problems. Importantly, enterprise activities also promote social responsibility, helping children understand how business can be used to make a positive difference within the community.

Career Events:

Children in Key-Stage 2 enjoy attending two career events held at the local secondary school. At these events, they meet with a wide-range of speakers who represent a vast array of career pathways, often exposing our children to careers that they previously did not know they existed!

Throughout the year, Broughton pupils take part in a wide range of cultural celebrations that help them develop an appreciation of the diverse world in which they live. Through assemblies, themed learning days, curriculum projects and whole-school events, children learn about different cultures, traditions, festivals and beliefs from around the world. These experiences encourage respect, understanding and curiosity, while helping pupils recognise and celebrate both similarities and differences between communities and cultures.

Language Learning:

Learning French provides pupils with valuable opportunities to explore another language and culture while developing communication skills and confidence. Through weekly French lessons, Key Stage 2 children learn to speak, listen, read and write in a modern foreign language, while gaining an understanding of French customs, traditions and everyday life. Language learning broadens children's horizons, promotes cultural awareness and helps them appreciate the value of communicating with people from different backgrounds and countries.

Environmental Projects Led by the Eco-Leaders:

Our enthusiastic Eco-leaders plays a leading role in promoting environmental awareness and sustainability across the school. Through a variety of projects and campaigns, pupils work together to improve the school environment, reduce waste, encourage recycling and promote responsible use of resources. These projects provide children with valuable leadership opportunities while helping them understand the importance of environmental stewardship and the positive impact they can have on their community and the wider world.
