We enjoyed testing materials to see whether they were insulators or conductors of electricity. We then used some materials to make our own switches!


This week we have been building circuits and drawing them using the correct symbols. To help us learn them, we used cards with the symbols on to play 'Snap' and 'Match the Pairs'

Forces in action


This week Class 6 have started a new unit in Science learning about Forces in Action. To start us off, we investigated the effects of gravity acting between the Earth and falling objects. We dropped three objects of different weight and size into a tray of flour, before analyzing the impact craters made. We measured the depth of each crater, as well as the diameter and found that smaller, lighter objects made deeper craters in the flour surface.
10/03/16 - Air Resistance
We have been investigating air resistance. We made parachutes of three different sizes and tested to see if the size affected the speed in which they fell to the floor.
After making our different sized parachutes we carried out an experiment to find out if the size of the surface area affects the amount of air resistance. We dropped our parachutes from the same height to ensure a fair test and measured the time it took for each one to land. We concluded that for most, the larger the surface area, the slower the parachute would fall due to the increased amount of air resistance. 

Seeing things

Class 6 enjoyed investigating how light travels and how mirrors can be used to reflect light, which can help us see areas that are not in our normal range of sight. We tried to create our own periscopes and used torches and mirrors to test how we can change the direction of light.


Our new topic this half term is based on different changes. We mixed a range of different solids with water and observed. Some solids dissolved and made a solution, some didn't mix and floated/sank to the bottom and some reacted and made new materials.
Separating solids from water

We were investigating how we could separate a range of solids from water. Some of the solids were soluble (dissolves in water) and some were insoluble (does not dissolve in water). We could either use a garden sieve, a kitchen sieve, filter paper or we could boil the water to make it evaporate.

We have investigated how materials can react with each other to form new products. We dropped some Mentos mints into a bottle of diet coke, which fizzed up extremely high. We understand that this was because the Mentos and the Diet Coke reacted to create a new product (gas). This is an irreversible reaction. 


We are learning about microorganisms. We used clay to create our own Petri dishes containing microbes we designed. Some are bacteria, some are fungi, and some are viruses. Can you tell which is which by looking at the shapes?

We have been learning how microbes can spread and understand that it is very important to wash and dry our hands properly to stop the spread of germs. We used a special hand gel and tried to wash it off with warm water and soap. After we dried our hands, we put our hands in an ultra violet light box which showed us the areas we had missed. It demonstrated that most of us were not washing our hands throughly enough. We are now using the six-step hand washing technique which will make our hands much cleaner!
