CARNIVAL 2014
 
Broughton children's Carnival was a great success. 30 children, led by Mrs. Shankland as Mary Poppins, paraded round the village accompanied by Brass bands, floats, and other groups on foot.

Lots of parents, friends and Academy Directors came to our Year 6 Leavers assembly! It was lovely to look back on all their achievements and celebrate!
 
Mr. Twelvetree presents Natasha with her dictionary and Leavers Year book, which all Year 6 received.

All Year 6 shared their favourite memories with us and interviewed each other to find out what their hopes for the future were.

What a fantastic number of children haven't missed a day off school this term. We had nine children who haven't missed a day all year; Nick Hodgson, Sam Greenbank, Rhiannon & Teagan Burgess, Philip & Cameron Sewell, Leanne Myers, Aplrak Reungprat, and Jake Kirkup. Well done!

Lots of staff left us this term, including Sophie who has been a brilliant Apprentice TA with us for the last two years. We were also sorry to lose Mrs Hawker who has been a fantastic teacher for the last seven years.

The Year 6 children had a great time at Keswick Spa and then out for a pizza in Keswick for their Leavers' Party.

Classes 2,3 and 4 had a penalty shoot out as part of our Commonwealth Games work. These are the lucky winners and runners-up.

'Crummock' won the team point contest in school this year. Their treat was to go to Keswick for the day where we had a lovely time playing in the park, eating ice-cream, and then feeding the ducks by the lake.

Cycling club had their last ride of the year and made it all the way to Buttermere!

Well done everyone as it was a hot day too!

The whole school, including Nursery, walked round Buttermere in the red hot sunshine. We had a nice picnic half way round and ice-cream at the end. Mr. Dobie came with us.

Nobody complained and the older children were really good at helping the little ones round.

It was all a bit exhausting for some of us though!

We had our annual staff/Directors night to celebrate the achievements of this academic year and plan ahead for the next one to come. We said goodbye to three long-serving governors; Mr. Sheard, Mr. Twelvetree, and Mrs. browning, who have given many years of service to the school and will be greatly missed.

This year we performed Mary Poppins for parents and friends of school. There were lots of songs and lines to learn but the children rose to the challenge brilliantly!

All the children took part in the Cockermouth Consortium Commonwealth Games event held at the Grassmoor Centre in town. Most of our children were in the Welsh team with some in the Scottish. It was a great day with lots of events to try like javelin, sprinting, and shot.

Chris Wright organised a different Sports Day for us this year where the four house teams moved round different stations trying lots of different events. Parents really enjoyed this change and the winners, being presented with their trophy by Chris, were Crummock.

The dental hygienist came to visit and talked about keeping our teeth healthy.

John Crouch came to cook healthy snacks.

We shared the food with our parents after school when they came to the demonstration too!

Dan and Rory entered the Tri Lakeland Triathlon which was held at Netherhall School. This was their first official, timed event which attracted around 150 entries. A triathlon involves swimming, cycling then running and both performed really well.

Year 3 and 4 had a glorious 3 day residential at Hawse End on the shores of Derwentwater. They experienced canoeing, climbing and abseiling, fell walking, orienteering and ghyll scrambling, and had a great time. We stayed down at the cottage next to the lake.

We had a great three days in London with our friends from Richmond Hill School, Aspatria. The weather was glorious and everyone enjoyed themselves. We had our usual guide called Joy.
 
Day 1
 

We visited the National Gallery and a guide talked to us about two paintings; one by Rembrandt called Belshazzar's Feast and one by Giordano called Perseus turning Phineas into stone.

We then went to St. Paul's Cathedral and from there to the London Eye where there was a good park to play on. Some of us even met David Beckham!

Day 2
 

We started at Trafalgar Square and walked down The Mall to Buckingham Palace. We then had a picnic in Regents Park. It was then onto Horse Guards Parade, down past Downing Street and onto a boat for a trip down the Thames to the Tower of London. Joy told us all about Tower Bridge after we'd had our ice cream.

At night we went to see The Lion King and everyone got dressed in their best clothes. As usual, the show was fantastic.

Day 3
 
Today started with a walk across the Millenium Bridge. We went to the Globe Theatre and enjoyed a workshop exploring A Midsummer Night's Dream. Our visit ended at the National History Museum - we managed to avoid being eaten by dinosaurs!

The Rotary Club kindly organised their annual 'Kids Day Out' which some of our children were lucky enough to attend along with pupils from Fairfield and Paddle. They had a great time visiting the Maryport Aquarium and Senhouse Roman Museum.
Multiskills 20/5/14
 
Year 1 children had a fantastic time at Cockermouth School, participating in a multiskills event.

We held our first session this week in Wythop wood where we have our own area. The Reception children had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the environment. We made mobiles from natural materials and played games in the woods.

Some KS2 children went to the triathlon event at Keswick and had a great time swimming, cycling and running. Then they had lots of fun in the park!

Mrs Byers retired after 19 years of working as a Midday Supervisor. Edna is loved by all the children in school and we will miss her a great deal. We would like to say a huge thank you to her for her commitment to our community over the years.

A group of students from Cockermouth School kindly came into school to talk to Gifted and Talented children about Maths Challenge.

April

100% Attendance 8/4/14
 
This term we had a fantastic number of children who had 100% attendance. We are very proud of them. Well done to everyone!

Easter
 
Gillian Beck came into school to organise our egg dump. Each person in school had a go at cracking someone else's egg. The winners from each class went through to the final which was held during the Easter fayre . The winner was Phillip Sewell in class 5 and the runner up was Tia Sewell in class 3. It was great fun!

All the mums and dads came to KABS' Easter Fayre and enjoyed a cup of tea and a cake. They watched our Easter bonnet parade and the egg dump final. Everyone had a good time!

KS1 and Nursery made Easter bonnets or Easter masks. There were some fantastic creations. Mrs Farley and Mrs Bryden had a really difficult job judging them. KS2 made cakes which looked really tasty!

During multicultural week, all classes got together to celebrate the music of each country/continent we have been studying. Reception children performed 'Dance dragon dance!' linked to their work on China, Years 1 and 2 did some African drumming and songs, Years 3 and 4 did an Indian head dance whilst Mr Strachan played the sitar and Years 5 and 6 did the Brazilian Samba and Cha Cha. We invited parents in to school to watch the performance. The children did very well and had lots of fun!

On the last day of our whole school multicultural topic, all children and staff had the opportunity to enjoy a lunch made up of foods from around the world, including curry, rice and Bombay potatoes. Mrs Farley and the lunchtime supervisors worked extremely hard to prepare and serve a delicious lunch which everyone enjoyed. It was fantastic to see so many clean plates!

Class 2 led Celebration Assembly with a China theme. They were very good and we all learned lots of new facts about China. There was a great dragon who joined them at the end too!

Mrs Foster has continued her coaching with Reception and Year 3/4 children. Here are Reception children doing some great work on the large and small apparatus.

Class 2 held a Mother's Day Tea Party after their assembly. They each invited a special guest who enjoyed cake and tea.

This week and next week is 'Big Ride' where we are all trying to either cycle or come on a scooter to school. Some of the staff are also cycling! We have had lots of children taking part!

Class 6 performed at the U-Dance Festival at The Theatre by the Lake. They are performing 'Heroes and Villains'.

Everyone brought their favourite book to school for us all to share and enjoy in assembly. Sam read 'Skellig', Kara read from the new David Walliams novel, Ms Waterhouse read from 'I'm telling you there's aliens' and Elise read her favourite book ever called 'Room on the Broom'.

Classes 2 and 5 are having specialist Gymnastic Coaching with Vanessa Foster as a result of the extra PE funding we have received. Here, Reception children enjoy their session.

Archdeacon Richard came to take assembly. We love having him in school! This week he talked about Shove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent.

Year 5 and 6 took part in an Indoor Athletics event at Cockermouth High School. This was testing and improving their agility and athletics skills.

Our five a-side football team took part in the Annual Tournament at The Sands Centre. They played really well, winning two games and losing two.

Everyone could wear a Christmas jumper or some sort of Christmas decoration for National Christmas Jumper Day! We had lots of fun and lots of lovely jumpers, including the staff!

The whole school enjoyed a performace of the Snow Queen by a visiting theatre group. There was lots of audience participation, including Leigh, Ashlee and Dana who wore costumes.

'The Christmas Spider' was performed twice to a packed hall full of parents and friends. We had an innkeeper, his wife, animals, three kings, shepherd, angels, soldiers, Mary, Joseph, spider narrators and a choir.

We raised a wonderful £900 at our Christmas Fayre - lots of fun including cake stalls selling cakes made by Yr 5/6, face painting and lots more!

A big "Thank-you" to the School Council for their help at the Christmas Fayre. They arrived early to man the stalls and set up their games!

As a reward, they all got an ice lolly or ice cream from Mrs Shankland.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal 18/11/13
 
Thank you to all those families who filled a shoebox to send to the Christmas Shoebox Appeal who distribute these to children in many countries who are less fortunate than us and who wouldn't receive gifts at Christmas otherwise.

This year our School Council organised a great afternoon. We had some wonderful acts in our "Two Minutes of Fame". We had dancers, gymnasts, magicians, joke tellers, poets and footballers! Thank you to all of you who made cakes for us to sell.

The choir sang for the Church Christmas Fayre in the village hall.

Our Year 3/4 tag rugby team qualified to play in a Mini World Cup Tournament before the Scotland vs. Italy World Cup game at Derwent Park, Workington.

The game started at 10m on a realy chilly morning and all the children played really well. Lots of parents came to support them too.

We then met at Derwent Park before the world cup game so some of the team were parading on the pitch with other teams who took part, which was very exciting in front of an 8000 capacity crowd.

Flags from both countries were then brought onto the field and the National Anthems sung by a choir.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue formed the Guard of Honour for teams and armed forces coming onto the pitch.

At half time Max, Rory & Logan were involved in short rugby games representing Broughton Red Rose and Flimby to entertain the crowds.

All in all, a very exciting day!

Miss Ford has been at Whinlatter all week doing a Level 3 Forest School training. Hopefully she will have completed the training by September 2014. Meanwhile she is starting a Pilot Forest School Programme shortly - details to follow!

Everyone had a fantastic time at KABS' Halloween Disco! There was lots of dancing, games, balloon crafts and hot dogs!

Richard came to take assembly. It was all about the significance of being 'Baptised', on the same day as Prince George was also baptised. He chose some parents and godparents to help him.
Year 3 and 4 had a fantastic experience taking part in a mini Rugby World Cup with lots of other schools!

Staff came from Home Housing to talk about safety on building sites and homes when workmen are about. They had lots of willing volunteers!

Well done to all the children who stood for election, it's a pity you couldn't all be on the council!

The School Council elections have taken place now and Year 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 have elected a boy and a girl from each year group.

We had our first 'working lunch' together to plan Children in Need and to devise a wet playtime computer rota.

All the children have been researching different artists and producing their own art based on their artist.

Lots of parents came to watch Y1&2 children lead our harvest celebrations. The children performed brilliantly and afterwards all the produce donated by parents was sold, with £87 going to the Bishop's Appeal for the Hungry.
