Class 2

Class 2 at Broughton Primary School is part of The Foundation Stage Unit. Ms Ford is the Teacher and she is helped by Miss Cockton in the morning and Miss Robinson in the afternoon.

All children follow the seven areas of learning and development as set out in the new 2012 Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Mornings are when the Reception children do literacy and mathematics activities and the afternoons are spent on topic work covering all aspects of the curriculum, through both play based activities and teacher led work.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area is the key to a child's successful development in all other curriculum areas. We help our children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and to learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

We celebrate birthdays in Class one - usually with 'Happy Birthday to you!' and a candle. But this time we had Fruit Kebabs! Yummy!

Physical Development

This area covers both fine and gross motor skills.We provide opportunities for all children to be active and interactive; to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. children are also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

Communication and Language

Children are given opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Enhanced provision, such as drama, role-play and visits to the wider environment are used to stimulate learning in a fun and engaging way. 
 
Rhyming games.

Literacy

Children learn to link sounds to letters and to begin to learn to read and write. We use the Letters and Sounds and Jolly phonics materials to support this learning. The children experience a wide range of reading materials including books, poetry, rhymes and computer language games.

We made bread as part of our work on "The Little Red Hen".

In literacy we have been working hard trying to use lots of describing words in our writing and talk.

We read Michael Rosen's 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and made dens and caves in the Eco area.

You Noisy Monkey!
Class 2 worked with Mrs.Hopper to make masks for our big book "You noisy monkey" and acted it out!
Magical Mini-beasts
We described our own magical mini-beasts then painted them.

Mathematics

Children have opportunities through play and guided activities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces and measures. Much of the work is practical and the outdoors are used as much as possible.

We have been looking at different coins in mathematics this week. We have been buying things for 1p in the currant bun shop. We then used the pennies to match that amount in our different purses.

Money problems and coins

On Friday mornings we have a 'Maths Workshop' when our class play number games and do mathematical activities. This includes using the ipads for maths.

Understanding the World

Children learn how to make sense of their physical world and their community through exploring and observing. They find out about people (for example our "People Who Help Us" topic), places, technology and the environment.

We went on an Autumn walk looking for signs that the season was changing.
We made a "leaf storm" and had a snack in the forest.
We have been looking at baby photos in Class 2, comparing how we looked then and now!
In Maths Workshops we play number games on the Ipads.

After our vsit from the RNLI we designed, made and tested our own lifeboats then used wind power to sail them!
We went for a walk to look for signs of Spring. The flowers had a lovely smell!

Expressive Arts and Design

Children are able to have hands on experience of a wide range of materials as well a opportunities to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design technology. All EYFS  children take part in the Christmas Nativity when they work with our specialist music teacher, Mr Strachan.
 

We've been making booklets all about ourselves. Do you like our orange feet?!

We made hedgehogs and gave them spiky leaf prickles and surrounded them with Autumn coloured leaves.

Topic

People who help us in School
 
We have been looking at people who help us in school. We visited Mrs. Farley, the school cook, in her kitchen.
We then made collage pictures of Mrs.Farley!
Finally, we made a class display of Mrs. Farley's kichen!
The Post Office
 

We have a Post Office in our class as part of the 'People Who Help Us' topic and we have been writing to each other.

We went to the Post Office in the village and found out how to send parcels and letters. We bought some stamps and posted a letter. The stamps are special ones celebrating Lewis Carrol's book 'Alice in Wonderland'.

RNLI
As part of our 'People who help us' topic, we were visited by David from the RNLI in Workington. We had fun trying on the clothes and playing with the RNLI animals, then made lifeboats afterwards.
Darren's Visit
One of the Directors, Darren, is an Anaesthetic Nurse and came in to talk to us about his job. We had great fun wearing the hats and masks but we didn't have any pyjamas to wear like he did!
Fire Station Visit
We went to the Fire Station in Workington and found out all about the Fire Service.

Special Events

Class Assembly
 
Our class assembly was all about our Forest School work. We were so pleased so many visitors came to see us. We made pictures and talked about them. We hope you liked our stick dance.

Soddy Gap Trip

Class 2 went with Class 3 to Soddy Gap. Maurice the National Trust ranger talked to us about the plants and mini-beasts. We had a lovely sunny day and made mini-mouse dens in the wood.

Luke Greenbank

Luke Greenbank came to talk to us in school. He's an ex-pupil and has won gold and silver medals in the Youth Games at Baku. What a star!

Coffee Morning

Special Persons Coffee Morning
We invited a special person into school to share cakes, coffee, tea and squash with. Lots of mums came, but we also had some Dads and Grans. We made cards and place mats.

Comic Relief

Our non-uniform day was a great success and we had lots of fun.

World Book Day

We dressed as characters from books by Julia Donaldson.

Everyone is in non-uniform for Children in Need.

Buddies

Our new Reception children now have a Year 6 Buddy to help them out at school. The older children help them to settle into school life, especially at lunchtimes and playtimes.
