Summer 1

Easter activities

This week we have enjoyed learning about the Easter story, taking part in some Easter traditions such as the 'egg dump', and making Easter arts and crafts.

Our frogs

Our classroom tadpoles have finally changed to frogs! We had a close look at some of the froglets before they were taken back to the pond, and we enjoyed making booklets showing the lifecycle of a frog.

Signs of Spring

We enjoyed some lovely warm Spring weather exploring outdoors and looking for 'signs' of Spring.

Eggs!

Following an interest shared by many children in our class, we explored eggs. First we looked at chicken's eggs - we cracked some open and looked carefully at the inside of an egg. We explored the egg shell, and then compared a raw egg to a hard boiled egg!

We then learnt about different animals that come out of eggs. We discovered that they are called 'oviparous' animals, and we each had to draw an animal that comes from an egg.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We were very excited to get our own caterpillars for the classroom which we will look after very carefully and watch them change and develop over the coming weeks. Our book focus has been 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and we have covered many areas of learning through this context: we have learnt about story structure and sequencing; we have enjoyed lots of different maths-related activities; and we really enjoyed a music and movement session helping us to understand the life cycle of a butterfly.

From caterpillar to butterfly!

We have been so excited to watch our caterpillars build a coccon round themselves, and then turn into butterflies! We very carefully released them into the eco-garden.

We learnt about symmetry and painted and decorated butterflies with symmetrical wings.

Growing things!

We have started looking at growing plants - we started with one of our favourite books 'Jasper's beanstalk'. We each planted our own runner bean seed in a see-through plastic container onto wet cotton wool. We really hope they will grow.
